When to Replace Your Badminton Gear: Rackets, Shoes, Strings and Grip Tape

Replacing badminton equipment: when is it time?

Bash Badminton-Shop

All badminton equipment wears out. There is no fixed expiry date, but there are clear signs. Here you'll find rough guidelines for rackets, strings, grip tape, shoes and shuttlecocks, plus the signals to watch for.

Rackets

Casual players usually replace their racket every one to two seasons. Tournament players often swap yearly and also play with several rackets in rotation.

Warning signs are shots that suddenly feel weak or imprecise, more frequent arm pain, or visible cracks in the frame. How to look after your racket and keep it fit for longer is explained in the racket care guide. You can find a new racket in our badminton rackets.

Strings

Casual and junior players restring once or twice a year, tournament players often after every third match. Strings that lose speed and precision, need more effort, or are visibly loose or broken should be replaced. For a detailed look, read the article How often should you restring a badminton racket?

You can find matching strings in our badminton strings. If you don't want to string your racket yourself, use our stringing service.

Grip Tape

As rough guidelines: junior players replace their grip tape about every six months, casual players every three months, ambitious players every four to six weeks and tournament players every two to four weeks. Slippery, worn or smelly grip tape is always a sign to replace it, whatever the calendar says. Choosing and replacing grip tape is explained in the guide Choosing the right grip tape and the tutorial How to wrap a grip tape on a badminton racket. You can find new grip tape in our badminton grip tapes.

Shoes

With regular training, a pair of badminton shoes lasts about one season. Ambitious players alternate between two pairs to protect both and make them last longer. It is time for new shoes when the sole gets smooth, you slip more often on court, or new pain appears in your heel, knee or back. What to look for when buying is covered in the guide What should you look out for when buying badminton shoes? You can find new shoes in our badminton shoes.

Shuttlecocks

Casual players use one to three shuttlecocks per session. In a club or at a tournament, it quickly becomes six to twelve. A shuttlecock is ready to be thrown away when it flies unsteadily, becomes noticeably slower or has visibly damaged feathers. The differences between natural feather, plastic and hybrid are explained in the article Difference Between Badminton Shuttlecocks. You can find replacements in our badminton shuttles.

Quick Overview

Equipment Casual Ambitious / Club Tournament
Rackets every 1–2 seasons yearly several in rotation
Strings 1–2x per year every few months after about every 3rd match
Grip tape every 3 months every 4–6 weeks every 2–4 weeks
Shoes about 1 season 1 season, possibly 2 pairs in rotation 2 pairs in rotation
Shuttlecocks 1–3 per session 6–12 per session 6–12 per session

These values are guidelines, not fixed rules. How often you really play, how intensively and on which surface noticeably changes how long your gear lasts.

Conclusion

Calendar rules are a good starting point, but the signals from your equipment matter more. A weak shot, a slippery shoe, a loose string or a sticky grip – if you watch for these, you replace gear in time and don't play with material that can no longer keep up.
