Neues Punktesystem im Badminton: So funktioniert 3×15 ab 2027

New Badminton Scoring System: How 3×15 Works from 2027

My Store Admin

Badminton is facing one of the biggest rule changes of the past 20 years: the current scoring system with two winning games to 21 is being replaced by a new one.

The Badminton World Federation approved the change on 25 April 2026 with 82 percent in favour. At international competitions the new system takes effect on 4 January 2027. France is introducing the format even earlier. Germany and Austria have now also determined which national competitions will be played to 15 in future. But how exactly does 3×15 work? And does the new rule really apply at every tournament and in every league? Here you'll find the most important answers.

How does the new 3×15 scoring system work?

The term 3×15 does not mean that three games are always played. As before, a match is played in “best of three” format. Whoever wins two games first wins the match.

These are the key rules:

  • Each game is generally played to 15 points.
  • Every rally won scores a point.
  • At 14:14 the game goes into extension.
  • After that, a two-point lead is required.
  • The game ends at 21 points at the latest.
  • At 20:20 the next rally therefore decides the game.
  • The one-minute break now takes place when a side first reaches eight points.
  • In a third game, the players also change ends when a side first reaches eight points.

Possible game scores are therefore, for example, 15:10, 16:14, 19:17 or a maximum of 21:20. If you'd like to review the basic rules again, our overview of the badminton rules will help.

What is the difference from the previous system?

Until now, a game is played to 21 points. From a score of 20:20, a two-point lead is likewise required, and the game ends at 30 points at the latest.

Under the new system, the extension already begins at 14:14 and ends at 21:20 at the latest. The rally-point system, on the other hand, remains unchanged: every rally still counts as a point, regardless of which side served.

So this is not a return to the old 15-point system, in which only the serving side could score.

Why is the scoring being changed?

With the shorter games, the BWF is pursuing several goals. Matches should become more compact, reach decisive phases earlier and be easier to plan for organisers as well as for TV and livestream broadcasts.

At the same time, the new scoring is intended to reduce the physical load and improve players' recovery. Because a game contains fewer points, each individual rally also carries more weight.

What changes for players?

Even though nothing changes on the court or in the basic procedure, 3×15 is likely to have a noticeable impact on how the game is played.

A good start becomes more important

An early deficit is harder to make up in a game to 15. Anyone trailing 2:7 or 3:8 has considerably fewer rallies available to get back into the game.

Small error streaks weigh more heavily

Three or four rallies lost in a row can already decisively influence a game. Concentration and consistency therefore become even more important.

Upsets become more likely

Favourites have less time to assert their quality over a longer game. Underdogs can benefit more from a strong start or a short good spell.

The decisive phase begins earlier

In 3×21, the particular pressure often only starts at around 16 or 17 points. Under the new system, scores such as 10:10 or 12:12 can already be decisive.

When does 3×15 apply internationally?

At international BWF competitions, the new scoring system will be used from 4 January 2027.

This makes 3×15 the new standard scoring at international tournaments, world championships and BWF World Tour competitions, among others. The national federations, however, decide for themselves when and to what extent they adopt the scoring in their own competitions.

Germany: 3×15 at DBV individual tournaments

On 22 June 2026, the German Badminton Association (DBV) decided to introduce the new scoring system from 4 January 2027 as the binding standard scoring for all individual tournaments at DBV level.

This applies to the individual competitions in the U19 and O19 categories. From that date, the scoring no longer has to be mentioned separately in the tournament announcement.

As early as 1 August 2026, organisers of DBV individual tournaments may use 3×15. In that case, the new scoring must be explicitly stated in the respective announcement.

What applies to team competitions in Germany?

The 1st and 2nd Bundesliga will remain with the 5×11 system already in use.

The DBV recommends that German groups and regional associations play the entire 2026/27 season with 3×21 and only switch to 3×15 for the 2027/28 season.

This means that during the transition period, different scoring systems may continue to be used in Germany depending on the competition.

Austria: 3×15 at the central ÖBV events

In Austria, the new scoring system will be introduced at the start of the national ranking season on 1 January 2027.

From that point, 3×15 applies at the following events:

  • ÖBV Elite ranking tournaments
  • ÖBV Advanced ranking tournaments
  • ÖBV U11/U13/U15 ranking tournaments
  • ÖBV U19 ranking tournaments
  • all Austrian Championships from U11 to U22
  • Austrian Senior Championships
  • Austrian National Championships including Para-Badminton
  • Austrian youth team championships U15 and U19

This means that all individual tournaments awarded by the ÖBV, as well as the youth team competitions mentioned, will uniformly be played to 15.

The Austrian Bundesliga stays with 5×11

One exception is the Austrian Bundesliga. Following a decision by the ÖBV Bundesliga forum, it will continue to be played with the 5×11 system.

Option to choose from September 2026

For further tournaments that are counted towards the Austrian ranking on request, organisers can already choose between 3×15 and 3×21 from September 2026.

Two requirements apply here:

  1. The entire tournament must be played with the same scoring.
  2. The scoring system used must be clearly stated in advance in the announcement.

For team championships and leagues within the Austrian regional associations, the respective regional association decides for itself. There, depending on the region, 3×15, 3×21 or other permitted systems may therefore continue to be used.

France: 3×15 as early as September 2026

France is introducing the new scoring system considerably earlier and more comprehensively.

From 1 September 2026, 3×15 applies to all competitions organised or approved by the Fédération Française de Badminton or its regional and local organisations.

This affects, among others:

  • national competitions
  • regional and local competitions
  • approved tournaments
  • French interclub competitions
  • the national interclub league

This means the new system will already be used in France during the 2026/27 season at almost all official levels of competition. The previous scoring with two winning games to 21 remains only as an alternative format for so-called Promobad competitions. With this, the French federation aims to avoid several scoring systems being used in parallel in regular competition.

The changeover at a glance

France1 September 2026Almost all competitions organised or approved by the FFBaD
Austria1 January 2027ÖBV individual tournaments, national championships and selected youth team events
Germany4 January 2027Individual tournaments at DBV level

Does 3×15 really apply everywhere from 2027?

No. Even after the international introduction, several scoring systems will exist in parallel.

In Germany and Austria, the top divisions will initially remain with the 5×11 system. For regional leagues and team championships, the responsible regional associations can make their own decisions.

France is taking a different path and is introducing 3×15 very comprehensively as early as September 2026.

Especially during the transition phase, players should therefore take a look at the tournament announcement before every event. Depending on the country, federation, tournament and league, play may continue with 3×21, 3×15 or 5×11.

Conclusion: fewer points, earlier pressure

With 3×15, the fundamental game of badminton does not change, but its dynamics do. The decisive phase of a game begins earlier, short error streaks are punished more heavily and a good start gains importance.

Whether matches will actually become more exciting and easier to plan will become clear over the coming seasons. One thing is certain, however: players and coaches will have to adapt to a new tactical situation.

Because in future it applies even more strongly: every single point counts.
